Henry began his digital career as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate bringing the benefits of BIM to Colour Urban Design Limited. He acted as Group BIM Implementation Manager at WYG where he was responsible for critical projects as well as developing and implementing the company’s BIM policy. Since then Henry has been a digital consultant working on diverse projects in sectors from Nuclear to Water. Henry’s experience across the built environment in the Information Management space allows him to represent the interests of clients, consultants and constructors that is grounded in his own experience and reality. Henry is committed to providing technical leadership and Information Management policy in a transparent and collaborative way so that it can meet the needs of the many stakeholders that it affects.

Henry is a passionate supporter of developing early career professionals and wants to enable and facilitate their career growth to build the resilience of this emerging profession. Andrew Carpenter

Chief Executive, Structural Timber Association (STA)

Andrew joined the UK construction industry in 1977 with the manufacturing giant CRH and held a series of sales and business development roles in his early years. It was the groundbreaking Rethinking Construction Report of 1998 that was to change Andrew’s career path as he became involved in change management and best practice, first within CRH and then later as a Board Member and Director of Constructing Excellence.

During this time he was the inaugural chair of the national ‘Best Practice’ Club network and the public face of Constructing Excellence being responsible for marketing, events, communications and membership.

From 2008 – 2010 he worked as a consultant in ‘lean’ measures, which included Andrew helping to set up and then become one of the first fifteen students of the CWA (Collaborative Working Academy).

Andrew was delighted to be asked to become Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association (then the UKTFA) in January 2011.

Andrew is now helping to spearhead the drive for Sustainable Construction by the use of more structural timber in building with a ‘Fabric First’ approach.

Andrew was appointed Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence South West in September 2013, stepping down in 2022, and Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence Midlands in May 2018.

In 2011 Andrew was rewarded for his services to best practice within the UK construction industry by being awarded the ‘Achiever Award’ in the 2011 CIOB/CESW South West Built Environment Awards.

Andrew is currently a member of the Construction Leadership Council Construct Zero Board and sits on the Government’s Timber in Construction Working Group.

Melanie is an Associate and Strategic Advisory lead at BIM Academy, specialising in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and information management according to ISO 19650.

She manages several projects across multiple sectors within the UK and internationally, and works closely with clients to develop bespoke digital strategies for project and asset management.

Melanie’s interests include change management, standardisation, and digital collaboration, and also acts as Regional Lead for Newcastle-upon-Tyne for Women in BIM. Melanie holds a PhD from Edinburgh Napier University, which investigated the micro-level factors to an effective macro-level diffusion of BIM, including the gap between perceived and actual efficacy of BIM understanding and skills.

Dr. Kay Rogage is Assistant Professor in Digital Human and Building Interactions in the School of Computing Information Sciences at Northumbria University and an active member of Northumbria’s BIM Academy Research Team.

She is an applied researcher who’s work spans across the disciplines of computer science and the built environment. Kay’s research focuses on the developing technical solutions that allow data integration across technologies enabling the interoperability of building models to overcome the technical barriers around data exchange in the built environment.

As a software developer in industry predominantly working in the digital construction sector, Kay has integrated her practical industry knowledge with academic research on a number of industry collaborations to overcome issues around disparate, fragmented data sets such as BIM data and sensor data, for developing knowledge from the data to support building operation and improve occupant well-being.

Her work involves using machine learning techniques to explore feature selection and pattern matching across data to improve data retrieval and interoperability.

David has considerable experience in capital delivery, strategic transformational change programmes, asset development and process improvement projects within client organisations.

With a proven track record of major infrastructure delivery, his approach through an “empowerment model” is transferable into most organisations. David has always favoured a people centric approach to delivery achieving exceptional “colleague engagement and enablement” feedback.

During his time at National Highways as the Regional Investment Programme Director, David was accountable for the development, design, procurement, and construction phases delivery of over £8bn of schemes in the Midlands, Northwest, and Yorkshire Northeast.

He was one of the architects of the Regional Delivery Partnership (RDP) framework (£11bn) and lead on National Highways initial response to UK Government’s Project Speed Initiative initially through the £1.4bn A66 Northern Trans Pennine Upgrade. David was then responsible for developing and delivering National Highways’ response further through its Delivery Acceleration Programme (DAP). DAP was cited by the IPA as “best-in-class” for achieving acceleration in public sector infrastructure scheme.

He was part of the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) leadership team for 10 years, during which, he led on constructing, buying, and selling of airports as well as transforming their operation. He acted as Programme Director on the Airport City (£850m) property development and as PMO Director for the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, looking after £1bn of capital expenditure.

Prior to becoming a BIM expert, Shadan’s background was in Architectural Engineering in which she obtained her BSc and MSc and worked since 2006. Her experience as an Architect covers a variety of projects which include large scale commercial, educational, residential and hospitality projects.

She entered the world of BIM in 2014 and obtained her PhD in the same area in 2019. As a BIM expert she has been working on high profile projects such as the Houses of Parliament and HS2, in addition to other infrastructure and defence projects.

Mairéad is an accomplished architectural professional with a diverse background in architecture, digital strategy, information management, and BIM.

She is currently the BIM Lead - Europe and Middle East at GRIMSHAW, where she provides leadership to the London, Paris, and Dubai Studio BIM teams. Her time in architectural practice of 19 years spans various sectors, including education, defence, justice, commercial architecture, high-end residential, build-to-rent, retail, and interior design.

Prior to GRIMSHAW, Mairead acted as the Specialist UK BIM Innovation Lead at Buro Happold where her focus was on leading the Specialist Consulting BIM team, driving digital, computational, and technological innovation across disciplines such as fire engineering, façade engineering, technology, acoustic engineering, security, and specialist lighting. As well as implementing new efficiencies Mairead worked as the Specialist BIM lead delivering multi-disciplinary packages on several complex global projects, and closely collaborating with the wider design teams.

Mairéad is a Women in BIM Mentor since its initial beginning, now in its fifth year. Through her mentoring she continues to contribute to diversity and inclusion within the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry. As an ambitious individual and a working mother, she actively participates in ambassador roles, panel discussions, and advocacy for diversity and inclusion.

Mairéad will be speaking at various conferences in 2024 as well as judging the Building Innovation Awards, where she’ll share insights on topics like data quality, automated construction management and innovations transforming the construction landscape.
